Breakfast in Africa
What do you do when you are hungry for breakfast, and the nearest Kroger or Trader Joes is over 7,326 miles away?
Why, you just find the nearest avocado tree and pick yourself a fresh avocado …

Locate a banana tree for some fresh bananas …
Then go to the local market to find delicious, sweet mangoes …
Grab some rice or sorghum while you are there …
Take it all home and pick the bugs and rocks out of your rice or sorghum. (No worries though. If you aren’t into bugs and rocks, and you aren’t in the African bush, here’s where I buy my rice or sorghum in the U.S.)
Cook it up in your little outdoor kitchen … (^ That’s my kitchen in the above photo. ^ I’m washing dishes. :))
And enjoy this scrumptious African breakfast. 🙂
Recipe? It’s super easy, quite flexible, very forgiving … and absolutely delicious!
(For a little extra help: Check out my post for my favorite way to cook rice on the stove top. And here’s how to cook rice and/or sorghum overnight in a slow cooker (crock pot).}

I would love to have your African breakfast, especially the fresh fruit right off the trees. The mangoes from our local store are nothing to be envied for. But I enjoy not having to pick bugs and rocks out of the rice before I cook it. (Are those other things figs?)
The other fruit are called tamarillos. The inside of the fruit is sweet/tart with a hint of citrus flavor.
I was in South Africa (Pretoria) in 2018. Did not see any of these trees! No gardens even. The ground did not look like it would produce. Where in Africa were you?
I’ve heard South Africa is a beautiful country. But oh, how sad that their were no gardens. I wonder why.
We were in Tanzania. The area where we lived was at a high elevation with a good amount of rainfall for several months of the year, so we saw a lot of gardens and even cultivated a few things ourselves.
Looks like a great breakfast to me. Can’t wait to see you back in MI and hear all about your great adventure!!
Looks like fun!
Such a unique, fun, mouth watering post. Thanks Jennifer. Safe travels.
Have fun take good care of your health too.
