Non-Dairy Milk

Where to buy it, how to use it, and more!

Non-dairy milk, or plant-based milk, is milk made from a variety of plant-based ingredients, such as almonds or soybeans. Most plant-based milk does not taste like dairy milk milk, and the taste varies greatly depending on what ingredients the milk is made from.

Because the consumption of dairy products contribute greatly to weight gain, the development of allergies, and health problems, there is a wide variety of non-dairy milks available today. Each of these non-dairy milks have their own distinct taste, as well as color and texture.

The following options are free from natural flavors and other undesirable ingredients.

SOY MILK – Eden soymilk and Pacific Foods Soy (from Azure or from Amazon)

ALMOND MILK – Elmhurst, Mooala

COCONUT MILK – Native Forest, Natural Value, shelf-stable Thai

HEMP – This hemp milk is free from natural flavors, but it does contain sweeteners.

OTHER – I’ve had a hard time finding other varieties of non-daIry milk without unhealthy ingredients.

Different varieties of non-dairy milk

Following is a list of some non-dairy milks:

Almond Milk

Almond milk has a slightly sweet taste and works well for baking and for over cereal.

Cashew Milk

Cashew milk is a thick milk with a distinct cashew flavor. Cashew milk is especially delicious in smoothies and works very well in dairy-free sauces.

Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is a rich milk with a strong coconut flavor. There are three different types of coconut milk available in stores –

canned coconut milk, which is thick and rich
shelf-stable cartons – this option is very similar to canned coconut milk
half-gallon milk containers in the dairy aisle

The refrigerated variety (in the dairy aisle) has a completely different texture and flavor than the other two. It is more pourable and works well over cereal. The downside is that this kind of coconut milk usually has added ingredients and isn’t as rich.

The recipes on my website use canned coconut milk or Thai shelf-stable.

Don’t confuse coconut milk with coconut water, the liquid found in the center of a fresh coconut, or with the sweetened cream of coconut used in mixed drinks.

Coconut Pineapple Milk

Coconut Pineapple Milk is my absolute favorite non-dairy milk, hands down!! As far as I know it isn’t available commercially, so I made my own! This milk is so amazingly delicious! Give it to me every day!

Coconut Walnut Milk

This creamy Coconut Walnut Milk is one of my favorite non-dairy milks.

Hazelnut Milk

Hazelnut milk is a non-dairy milk made from hazelnuts.

Hemp Milk

Hemp milk, a milk made from hulled hemp seeds, has a taste that is somewhat nutty, but much different than nut milks. Different brands have different flavors. Some varieties of hemp milk have a strong enough flavor to be overpowering in some dishes.

Multi-Grain Milk

Multi-grain milks are made from oats, triticale, barley, soybeans, brown rice, and/or amaranth. They each have a unique flavor depending on the ingredients used.

Oat Milk

Oat milk is light-textured, mild-tasting milk made from oats. I don’t recommend commercially-available oat milk because it is made from raw grains which are not healthful. Instead, I recommend making your own oat milk from cooked oats.

Potato Milk

Potato milk is made from potatoes and works well is creamy soups and other savory dishes.

Rice Milk

Rice Milk is made from brown rice and is sweeter and has a thinner (lighter) consistency than other non-dairy milks. Rice milk works well in cooking, baking, and over cereal.

Soy milk

Soy milk, a milk made from soybeans. Taste and consistency vary widely among the many brands available, so if you don’t like one brand, be sure to try another.

Soy milk works well over cereal and in baking and cooking (although some varieties will curdle if boiled).

Strawberry Milk

Strawberry milk from the grocery store is typically loaded with sugar and other unhealthful ingredients. Here is my recipe for healthy, sugar-free Strawberry Milk.
