What are steel cut oats?

When the whole-grain oats (oat groats) are harvested from the field, they are oval in shape – somewhat like rice or farro. Rolled oats are whole-grain oats that have been flattened. Steel-cut oats are whole-grain oats (oat groats) that have been cut into two or three pieces. This method leaves steel-cut oats with a texture that’s heartier than rolled oats.

What do steel-cut oats taste like?

Steel-cut oats are hearty, flavorful, and satisfying. Most people who try steel-cut oats say they’ll never go back to regular rolled oats again.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a 2-quart slow cooker.
  • Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours. (For best results, do not remove lid during cooking process.)
  • When oats are done, remove lid and stir very well to combine the thicker oats on the bottom with the thinner oats on the top.

Notes

All slow cookers cook differently. If your cooker tends to lose more or less liquid than most and your hot cereal turns out too thin or too thick, adjust liquid amount accordingly the next time you prepare it.

FAQ

Can I add raisins or other dried fruit to the Crockpot Oatmeal before cooking?

For best results, I recommend adding dried fruit after the oats are cooked. If you want your dried fruit to be softened, add it to the oatmeal in the last 45 minutes of cooking time.

I’ve tried adding dates, raisins, and other dried fruit to my oats before cooking them in my slow cooker, but the flavor and the sweetness of the fruit tend to get diluted with the long-cooking time.

Can I use rolled oats instead of steel-cut oats in this recipe?

You can, but I don’t recommend it. Steel-cut oats hold up to crockpot cooking much better than rolled oats. If you would like a breakfast that uses rolled oats, try my Baked Apple Blueberry Oatmeal or Fig Pear Oat Bake.

Do you have a brand of slow cooker that you recommend?

Yes! You can find my recommendations for the best slow cookers on this page.

Can I double this recipe?

Yes, this recipe is for a 2-quart slow cooker. If using a larger slow cooker, you can increase ingredient amounts proportionately.

Do I have to soak steel-cut oats before cooking them?

Nope. Just put your oats and water in the crockpot, turn it on, put the lid on, and you’re done!

No need to soak the oats first.

How do you store cooked Crockpot oatmeal?

Place your cooked steel-cut oatmeal in a container with a tight-fitting lid. (I use my glass containers.) Cooked steel-cut oats will keep in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days.

Can you freeze steel-cut oatmeal?

Yes, cooked steel-cut oatmeal can be frozen for up to 3 months.

How do you reheat cooked steel-cut oatmeal?

To reheat, place 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup of non-dairy milk or water in a saucepan and begin heating over medium heat. Add oatmeal and cook until hot, stirring often. The amount of liquid you need will depend on how much oatmeal you are reheating.
