Hello! My name is Sarah, and I am a food photographer. I take the photos here at Jennifer’s Kitchen – a job that I love!

When I’m not taking photos, you can almost always find me outside in the garden. (My favorite garden job is weeding!) Sometimes, I’m in the garden and doing photography. After all, is there anything better than a freshly picked bowl of richly-colored lettuce or the bright orange carrots beneath their vibrant green tops poking up from the dark earth?

What about the rainy days? Those are the perfect days to experiment in the kitchen. I have been on a gluten-free diet for many years and have spent almost that long learning the art of gluten-free baking.

My Photography Equipment

I use a Nikon D7000 camera body, a Sigma 70 – 200 F2.8 lens and a Nikon 28 – 105 F3.5 lens.

All natural light is my preferred lighting for food photos. Using a window gives food photos directional lighting naturally without spending money for lighting setups.

My diffuser gives more control over the light while still keeping it natural. If it’s a bright sunny day, the diffuser diffuses the light and softens shadows.

Sometimes I use a simple white board as a reflector to brighten a particular area of the photo or reflect some light onto the dark side of the photo. The amount of light reflected is easily adjusted by how close and what angle the white board is held. And sometimes I will use a black board to block light from a certain area of the photo to give it a more moody feel.

I will often use a remote that plugs into the camera body. This eliminates any accidental shaking or bumping of the camera. It also comes in handy when I need to hold something in the photo and can’t quite reach the camera.

I have a Manfrotto 3001B tripod with a 486RC2 ball head. The tripod is not too heavy or bulky and yet it has so many features. I can always get the angle I’m looking for!
