Why you need one
I really like waffles because they are so healthy and yet they’re really easy. I make a batch of 6 or 7 waffles ahead of time and keep them in the freezer for a quick breakfast on busy mornings. (I reheat them in the toaster or on my comal.)
I’ve made over 8,000 healthy, whole-grain waffles in my beloved waffle iron and I really like it, but the model I have isn’t available anymore. So I tested a bunch of waffle irons so I could know which one to recommend to others. Unfortunately, the newer models don’t get as hot as the older ones do. 🙁
What to look for in a waffle maker
Waffles made from healthy, whole-food ingredients can be a healthy part of a nourishing breakfast, but not all waffle irons are the same. It’s important to choose a waffle maker that recovers heat quickly and heats evenly. And some waffle irons don’t get hot enough to make healthy, whole-grain waffles.
What is the best waffle iron?
Healthy waffles need a really hot iron to bake properly. I recommend this small, round waffle iron. It’s not a Belgian iron, but it gets nice and hot and bakes beautiful waffles. (And, to be honest, I like the waffles that come out of it better than the ones from my Belgian iron.)
This waffle iron heats quickly and bakes waffles evenly. And I love that it stands upright for easy storage. Its compact profile takes up just a tiny space on my cabinet shelf.
What’s the difference between regular waffle irons and Belgian waffle irons?
Belgian-style waffles are much thicker than regular waffles and their pockets are larger (and fewer). Regular waffles are thinner and typically have more pockets.
Textures vary, but often regular waffles are a little crispier than Belgian-style waffles.
Is a waffle iron the same thing as a waffle maker?
Yes. The terms are often used interchangeably.
Should you use cooking spray on a waffle iron?
If your waffle iron is new and has nonstick plates, do not cooking spray! Your waffles shouldn’t stick on a new iron. But if you do put cooking spray on it, it causes the waffle maker plates to lose their non-stick.
Do you have a recipe for healthy waffles?
Yes! I have a recipe for the most wonderful waffles! These waffle are cholesterol-free, sugar-free, and made from whole-grains. Everyone loves them!!
