The Old Hickory

Slipping on our rubber boots and grabbing a couple of optimistically-sized bowls, Sarah and I hiked down the driveway, across the side yard, and into the woods this evening to where a towering Hickory has claimed residence for many more years than we have lived here.

Brushing aside the blanket of leaves we found quite a few tan-colored nuts nestled in their half-shell cradle … but even more empty shells telling us that some little creature has been here before us.

We filled our bowls until I got chilly and decided it was time to go in. Despite the patience required to crack them, I really enjoy those little treats.
